Dog Emergencies – How To Deal With Them

Dog Emergencies

Image via Wikipedia

Dog emergencies can happen any time and any place… knowing how to deal with them can save precious time and your pet’s life.  Have you ever thought about what you need to do should your dog – or another dog – ever suffer a serious, life-threatening injury? What if they have a severe allergy to an insect bite or a bee sting? It’s great to know your veterinarian’s phone number, but what if something happens during off hours? What if you don’t know where the closest emergency animal clinic is located?

Uggggh, enough with the questions already, right? Any emergency is stressful and scary, and one involving that furry little four-legged member of your family is no exception. The toughest of owners can be instantly reduced to helpless balls of mush if something’s wrong with their dogs and they can’t figure out what to do.

Preparation is key – The key to getting through a veterinary emergency is preparation. You may think you have that covered with a first aid kit and having the phone number to your vet handy, but what if there isn’t enough time to move your dog? You need to be well-versed in some of the more common animal emergencies just in case a situation ever arises. And hey, if a situation never arises, you’ll still feel more confident knowing that you have the ability to deal with one.

Suggestions for supplies to keep handy should include a towel or blanket, gloves, scissors, tweezers, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, eyewash solution (for pets of course,) and baby Benadryl for allergic reactions.  Place these in a container to have everything in one place along with reference numbers for your vet and closest animal emergency clinic.

Know how to care for wounds -  Did you know that you shouldn’t use hydrogen peroxide on a bleeding wound? That’s right, it slows clotting to the area, which means your dog could actually lose more blood than he would if you didn’t use the peroxide at all. In fact, the best way to treat a deep, severely bleeding wound is to apply a clean cloth and hold it in place for five minutes, then tape the cloth to the wound. That original cloth should never be removed – that also slows clotting – and should instead be layered with more clean cloths if blood soaks through.

Know what to do about poisoning – Did you know that certain varieties of toads, salamanders, newts, and other amphibians are poisonous if licked?  Hey, guess who loves to hold little woodland critters in his mouth! Your dog. If you notice your pup drooling, whining, and wiping at his mouth after a trip into the forest, get him to a clean water source and rinse his mouth thoroughly. While the poison can be fatal if left in the mouth, it’s fairly easy to cleanse from the tongue and glands.

Now imagine all of the scenarios that can happen to your dog, from fractured limbs to choking and everything in between. Do you really want to risk not knowing how to handle them? to help you learn how to cope with nearly any emergency as well as have the basis for handling all of the everyday and lifelong problems and situations you’ll face with your dog. as well as how to create the most effective first aid kit and handle the most common emergencies. Listen, even the most experienced dog owner needs a little help and advice now and then.  Until next time…  Remember to Keep It Pawsitive,

Natural pet remedies you can make at home for common, sometimes chronic, dog health issues is waiting in your herb garden or flower bed.  Now you can safely, naturally, and effectively treat common chronic health problems for your pets with home remedies.  Don’t misunderstand — I’m not saying to disregard your vet, today’s pet medicine has improved over the years and there will be times when you need to consult with your own vet or even a specialist.

What about those recurring issues you will encounter as a pet owner?  Some of the most common that come to my mind are allergies, arthritis, ear infections, and even cancer.  Some herbs to consider as natural pet remedies are:  Acerola = it is a tropical fruit-bearing shrub or small tree, is rich in Vitamin C and a natural antihistamine.  Ginger helps settle the stomach, try smearing some grated ginger on to a dog treatOil of Oregano = not only is it a tasty spice to cook with, it can also be used for humans and canines alike for a natural antibiotic.

More natural pet remedies you may find in your kitchen pantry could help eliminate doggie breath are to mix a shredded carrot, lime juice and half cup of chopped fresh mint.  This can be served as a yummy treat, or… even freeze in ice cube trays for a cool pupcicle.

Hope this generates some interesting and useful tips for you and your pets.   Until next time,

Pet Adoption – Cute Video

Molly: I can be Adopted at the North Attleboro...

This is the cutest video I just had to share.  Enjoy.

Pet Adoption can be one of the most rewarding for both human and animal.  Shelter animals make great pets so please consider adopting one if you are ready to bring home a new friend.

Pets have been affected by the economic crisis we have been facing and perhaps the most obvious sign is the large number of dogs and cats discarded by owners who were forced to abandon their homes.  On top of that now that the holidays are over the animal shelters will be over loaded with unwanted canine and feline ”Christmas gifts.”

I want to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year and stay tuned for more from Doggie Treasures 4u and Remember to keep it pawsitive,

Fun Dog Activities

An Australian Shepherd doing agility at the Ro...

Fun activities with your dog can give you both a connection emotionally as well as enjoying life together.  All dog breeds were developed for a purpose. Some breeds were developed to herd sheep, some to hunt game, and some to pull sleds. Dogs, like humans, enjoy having a purpose in life. Dogs like to lead a structured life and be able to associate with their owners in activities and be given the opportunity to please their owner. The following is a short list of fun activities that you may want to consider for your dog:

Dog Agility is a sport in which a handler must control and direct his dog around an obstacle course within a set period of time. Dogs must be controlled off-leash using only voice and body language commands. Dogs and handlers need to be very well trained and seem to enjoy this sport immensely. There are a number of organizations involved in agility performance around the world. In the US, some of these organizations include: the American Kennel Club (AKC), the United States Dog Agility Association, and the North American Dog Agility Council.

Obedience is a skill that ranges from mastering everyday commands that all dogs should know to competitive exercises that require significant training and aptitude to excel. You may start out teaching your puppy and young dog the basic obedience commands and find that you and your dog have an aptitude for obedience skills that you would like to take to a higher level. In competitive obedience the dog and handler team must perform prescribed activities off leash and in a carefully defined way.  At each level the requirements become more difficult and the number of exercises to be performed get longer.  Purebred dogs can compete in obedience trials sanctioned by the AKC, while the UKC recognizes other purebred dog competitions. As well, there are mixed breed competitions sanctioned by the Mixed Breed Dog Club of America and other organizations. In Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club sanctions obedience trials and awards titles.

Lure coursing is a sport for sighthounds that involves chasing a manually or mechanically operated artificial lure across a field in a “coursing” pattern. The competition is usually  restricted to pure-bred sighthounds including: Afghan Hounds, Basenjis, Borzois, Greyhounds, Ibizan Hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Pharaoh Hounds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, and Whippets. The hounds love to play this sport and puppies can be introduced to the sport through lure coursing practice sessions. In the US, the American Sighthound Field Association or the AKC can “certify” that dogs have been trained and are eligible to enter their sanctioned competitions. In Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club sanctions lure coursing but excludes the Italian Greyhound because they consider it a toy dog.

Tracking can be learned by all dog breeds because all dogs use their noses to identify things and explore the world. Training can be started as early as 10 to 12 weeks of age as all puppies love to use their noses to sniff out a trail. As with all training, positive rewards (treats, praise etc,) and re-enforcement work best. The AKC sanctions tracking tests and events in the US. This vigorous non-competitive outdoor sport allows dogs to demonstrate their ability to recognize and follow human scents. In Canada, the CKC sponsors tracking events and you can check their website for a list of nearby events.

Field Trials are regularly held for Basset Hounds, Beagles and Dachshunds to demonstrate their ability to find and track game. Similarily Field Trials and Hunting Trials are held almost every weekend across the country for the Pointing Breeds, the Retrievers, and Spaniels to allow them to compete and demonstrate their hunting abilities under a strict set of conditions. If you are an owner of a hunting dog puppy, you will want to look into many of the organized activities designed for your dog. Check out the AKC or CKC websites for a list of contacts and field trials in your area.

Other Fun Activites that you might wish to explore include flyball, frisbee, herding and drafting competitions.  Hope this juices up your creative side and you get out there and have lots of fun with your favorite canine companions.
